Is it me? No!

1 COR 10

23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

Yesterday I was talking to my dad about selfishness and coveting.  Now if you call someone selfish, they’ll likely get defensesive, which is funny because it’s exactly what our western culture teaches us we should be.  I’d like to know where scripture says “love yourself”.  Our worldview teaches us that loving yourself is the most important thing you should do.  You need to love yourself to love others.  You need to have confidence in yourself to gain success.  Now recognizing you’re made in the image of God and revering that IS a positive thing, but it isn’t something to dwell on.  Christ said the most important commands are to love God and love our neighbors.  When we take the focus off ourselves on put it on others something happens…we become unselfish and stop coveting.  This is because we accept our lowly state as humble servant, which is what Christ did.  Are we not to follow his example? Is that not one of the reasons he came, to show us how to live and love.  Verse 24 says “No one should seek their own good, but the good of others” Are you willing to live this out? I challenge you, give it a try.  Consciously put other people before yourself in everything you say and do today, just so you can see how selfish you actually are.  From that point, set your mind on things above and be transformed.

32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself:

How is what I’m doing affecting others, even potentially

If I represent Christ, what will others think of Christ when they look at me

Even if what I do feels good to me, if I didn’t do it could that be beneficial to someone else

Lord God in Heaven, Father all praises to you for your precious gift of life.  Life not our own, but life lived for you our creator and Lord.  Thank you for your son who gave his life to satisfy a wrath not brought by him, but by us.  Spirit enable us to put ourselves aside.  Help us to understand that love is sacrifice and that we mUST love, not just those easy to love, but even our enemies.   Help us to realize that our love is what sets us apart, our love and reverence and loyalty to you and our love of one another should show the world a love they don’t understand and wish to gain.  Spirit may that love be in each one of us through your guidence and your strength.  Lord Jesus thank you for not leaving us alone, but providing us help for our daily walk.  Thank you God for the bread of life which gives nourishment to walk the narrow path on which we are called to.  Blessed be your name for all eternity.  All praises and honor are yours.  Thank you Father,  Son and holy ghost. Amen
